Secretary of Homeland Security Johnson to speak at Rice’s Baker Institute June 8

HOUSTON – (June 4, 2015) – U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson will discuss border security in the 21st century at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy June 8. This is Johnson’s first visit to the Baker Institute.

Who: Jeh Johnson, U.S. secretary of homeland security. Edward Djerejian, Baker Institute director, will provide introductory remarks.

What: A presentation titled “Finding the Balance: Border Security in the 21st Century.”

When: Monday, June 8, 2-3 p.m. CDT. Media are requested to arrive and be in place by 12:45 p.m.

Where: Rice University, James A. Baker III Hall, Kelly International Conference Facility, 6100 Main St.

Johnson was sworn in as the fourth U.S. secretary of homeland security Dec. 23, 2013. Prior to joining the Department of Homeland Security, Johnson served as general counsel for the Department of Defense, where he was part of the senior management team and led the more than 10,000 military and civilian lawyers across the department. As general counsel of the Defense Department, Johnson oversaw the development of the legal aspects of many of the nation’s counterterrorism policies, spearheaded reforms to the military commissions system at Guantanamo Bay in 2009 and co-authored the 250-page report that paved the way for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in 2010.
