Rice mentors provide a path to computer science for girls in middle school

The Schlumberger Rice Computer Engineering Design Academy for Middle School Girls inspired young women to envision themselves as scientists and engineers. For two weeks, 28 Houston-area middle school students got hands-on design experience connecting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to real-life applications using new and exciting technology.

Participants learned computer-aided design (CAD) programming and created three-dimensional objects using rapid prototyping, including a 3-D printer. The students wrapped up the academy by showcasing the remote control vehicles they designed, built and programmed.

About Brandon Martin

Greetings, I am a video producer at Rice University in the Office of Public Affairs. I became a Rice Owl in June 2011. Before that, I was at KPRC-TV in Houston as a special projects photojournalist for seven years, where I covered everything from hurricanes to sports. Southeast Texas has been my home my entire life. I am lucky to have a wonderful wife and two of the cutest girls I have ever seen. Go Owls!
