Rice’s Shepherd School of Music announces October performances
HOUSTON – (Oct. 6, 2015) – Events at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music during October include recitals and master classes by distinguished guest artists and the return of its ongoing Sharing the Spotlight series in which faculty and students share the stage. Unless otherwise noted, all performances are free and open to the public.
What: Aleko Artist Recital: Ana María Martínez, soprano
Grammy Award-winning soprano and Houston Grand Opera celebrated artist Ana María Martínez will present a solo recital as the Shepherd School’s 2015-2016 Aleko Endowed Master Class Artist.
Where: Stude Concert Hall, Alice Pratt Brown Hall.
When: Thursday, Oct. 8, at 8 p.m.
What: Aleko Endowed Master Class: Ana María Martínez, soprano
The 2015-2016 Aleko Endowed Master Class will feature internationally acclaimed soprano Ana María Martínez working with Shepherd School voice students.
Where: Duncan Recital Hall, Alice Pratt Brown Hall.
When: Friday, Oct. 9, at 3 p.m.
What: Faculty and Guest Artist Recital
Brinton Averil Smith, cello, and Evelyn Chen, piano (guest), will present a program featuring music of Korngold, Rózsa and the Hollywood School.
Where: Duncan Recital Hall, Alice Pratt Brown Hall.
When: Friday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m.
What: The Anne and Jack Lynn Endowed Fund Master Class: Emanuel Ax, piano
The 2015-2016 Lynn Endowed Master Class will feature renowned American classical pianist Emanuel Ax coaching Shepherd School piano students.
Where: Stude Concert Hall, Alice Pratt Brown Hall.
When: Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m.
What: Guest Artist Recital: Olivier Latry, organ
Olivier Latry, organist of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris and professor at the Paris Conservatory, will present a concert of classical music and improvisation for organ.
Where: Edythe Bates Old Recital Hall and Grand Organ, Alice Pratt Brown Hall.
When: Friday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m.
What: Faculty and Guest Artist Recital
Brian Viliunas, clarinet (guest); Michael Webster, clarinet and basset horn; and Robert Moeling, piano, will present a program featuring music of Vincent Persichetti, Karim Al-Zand, Eric Mandat, Fredrik Högberg and Felix Mendelssohn.

When: Saturday, Oct. 17, at 8 p.m.
What: Faculty and Guest Artist Recital
Andrzej Grabiec, violin (guest); Ivo-Jan van der Werff, viola; Norman Fischer, cello; and Robert Moeling, piano, will present a program including Franck Piano Quintet in F Minor and more.
Where: Duncan Recital Hall, Alice Pratt Brown Hall.
When: Thursday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m.
What: Sharing the Spotlight Series
Faculty member Desmond Hoebig, professor of cello, with doctoral students Boson Mo, violin, and Andrew Staupe, piano, will present a program of Kodaly Duo for Violin and Cello, Op. 7, and Schubert Piano Trio in B-flat Major, D. 898.
Where: Duncan Recital Hall, Alice Pratt Brown Hall.
When: Saturday, Oct. 24, at 8 p.m.
What: Sharing the Spotlight Series
Faculty member Benjamin Kamins, the Lynette S. Autrey Professor of Bassoon, with doctoral student Max Geissler, cello, will present Mozart’s Sonata, K. 292; Couperin’s Sonata No. 3 from “Les Goûts Réunis; Vivaldi’s Concerto, RV 531; and Handel’s Sonata, Op. 2 No. 8.

When: Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m.
What: Sharing the Spotlight Series: Alumni Composers Concert
In celebration of the Shepherd School’s 40th anniversary, faculty and students will present a concert of music by alumni composers. One composer from each decade of the Shepherd School will be represented, including Richard Lavenda, professor of composition and theory and director of graduate studies, Kerry Jones, Malcolm Solomon, Ana Paula Santillan and Karl Blench.

When: Thursday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m.
What: Faculty Recital
Tim Pitts, professor of double bass.
