MOVIE MAGIC, GREENWICH VILLAGE BOHEMIA TOPICS OF RICE
COURSE
Former national professor of the year
Dennis Huston will explain how directors and cinematographers go about making
movie magic. Bill Martin will analyze New Age spirituality, and Allen Matusow
will explore the earliest days of the American counterculture.
These are just a few of the outstanding Rice professors who will speak on
their favorite subjects during a Rice University Continuing Studies course
titled “Thirty Years of George R. Brown Teaching Award Winners.” The fall course
is open to the public and begins Sept. 24. It is one of the many courses being
offered by the School of Continuing Studies.
Eleven professors in all, including those from the fields of science, will
speak. Each has received a George R. Brown Award, one of Rice’s most coveted
teaching prizes.
Among the award-winning teachers who will speak during the 11-week
course:
-
Professor of English Dennis Huston will address “Magic in the Movies.” Huston will show how filmmakers shape the way we see the cinematic world through
the use of light, color, camera angles, costumes and music. Huston was named the
nation’s top professor in 1989.
-
Sociology professor and religion expert William Martin will give a talk
titled “Embracing the Lite: Reflections of Popular Spirituality.” Martin will
analyze themes within the New Age movement, as presented in best sellers such as
“The Celestine Prophecy” and “Conversations with God.”
-
Professor of History Allen Matusow has chosen “Greenwich Village Before the
Great War&emdash; An American Bohemia.” Matusow will profile the forerunners
of the American counterculture&emdash;those who gathered in Greenwich
Village during the first decade of this century and rebelled against the middle
class. The subject is “full of fascinating characters and anecdotes and makes a
serious point about youthful rebellion,” Matusow says.
“Thirty Years of George R. Brown Teaching Award Winners” will be held
Wednesdays, Sept. 24 through Dec. 10, from 7-8:15 p.m. The other speakers, in
order of appearance, are John Hutchinson, associate professor of chemistry;
Richard Smith, professor of history and director of Asian studies; Elizabeth
Long, associate professor of sociology and professor of women and gender
studies; John Ambler, professor of political science; Gilbert Cuthbertson,
professor of political science; Frank Jones, professor and chair of mathematics;
Marco Ciufolini, professor of chemistry; Ronald Sass, professor and chair of
ecology and evolutionary biology and professor of chemistry.
This fall Continuing Studies will also launch the Millennium Series,
featuring courses dealing with events or developments of the first millennium
that have had a significant impact on the way we live and think today.
Millennium Series courses will be offered until the year 2000.
Also being offered this fall is “With God on Our Side: The Rise of the
Religious Right in America.” Professor of Sociology William Martin, the author
of a highly-acclaimed book of the same name, will trace the movement’s history
and provide analysis.
