GUIDELINES FOR POLICE, AFRICAN AMERICAN LEADERS `SUMMIT’
The following information is designed to assist news
media outlets planning to cover the summit meeting between leaders of the
nation’s law enforcement and African American communities on Thursday, Sept. 26.
The program starts at 9 a.m. in the Kyle Morrow Room on the third floor of
Fondren Library at Rice University. A media work area in the lobby directly
outside the room will be available for reporters and crews attending the event.
A “pool” camera will provide audio/visual feed to the work area of the
discussions between the two groups. Television monitors will be in place for
reporters to follow the dialogue.
A break in the proceedings will occur around noon for lunch. Television or
radio crews interested in scheduling interviews for their noon newscasts should
contact Michael Cinelli in the Rice University News Office, (713) 831-4794, as
soon as possible in order to secure a summit participant. These interviews will
be subject to availability of the participants.
The proceedings will resume around 1 p.m. and end about 5 p.m. Immediately
after the summit ends, a news conference will be held to announce recommended
steps to be taken to begin building bridges between the two communities.
Morning television shows wanting to schedule interviews for Friday morning
programs (Sept. 27) should contact Cinelli by Wednesday, Sept. 25, to secure a
participant for their program. Again, interviews will be subject to
availability.
Fondren Library can be reached by coming in Entrance 8 off of University
Drive. Parking for the event will be along Inner Loop Drive. Campus police
officers and News Office staff will help direct vehicles to available parking
spaces.
The event is sponsored by the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy
at Rice and underwritten by a grant from AT&T.
