RICE ALUMNUS
ALBERTO GONZALES NAMED TO NEW BUSH ADMINISTRATION

Newly appointed
National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice is not the only “Rice” in the new
Bush administration. A Rice University alumnus is also among the new appointees.

Texas Supreme Court
Justice Alberto Gonzales ’79 was picked by President-elect George W. Bush to be
White House counsel. Gonzales was a member of Lovett College and received a
bachelor’s degree in political science from Rice. He received a law degree from
Harvard in 1982.

Formerly a partner at
Vinson & Elkins, Gonzales was Gov. Bush’s first chief lawyer. Bush appointed
Gonzales secretary of state before naming him to the Texas Supreme Court in
1998.
