Shepherd School Symphony
Orchestra
On April 28, the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra, under the
direction of Larry Rachleff, will conclude its memorable season with an
assortment of exciting compositions by Stravinsky, Elgar and Shepherd School
master’s candidate Robert Gross.
The program will include Gross’ “Halcyon Nights” (premiere),
Elgar’s “Cello Concerto” and Stravinsky’s “Petrouchka.”
The concert will be at 8 p.m. in Stude Concert Hall. The event
is free and open to the public.
“Halcyon Nights,” composed by Gross is “a powerful, challenging
work,” Rachleff says. It will be conducted by Shepherd School master’s student
Marlon Chen.
Shepherd School graduate cello student Livia Stanese will be the
featured soloist for Elgar’s “Cello Concerto,” which Rachleff describes as a
“deep, rich, melancholy work.” Stanese performs in this concert as a winner of
the 1999 Shepherd School Concerto Competition.
Stravinsky’s “Petrouchka” is a “tour de force for an orchestra,”
Rachleff says. “It’s a piece that you hear from time to time but not regularly.
It calls for a huge orchestra, is very challenging and brings to a close a very
meaningful season.” For more information on the concert call the concert office
