For 35 Years,
Director’s Groundbreaking Productions Have Enriched the Life of the
City

In 1963, when Sandy
Havens was trying to make it on Broadway, he heard about an acting job. It might
have been just the break for a handsome young man with talent. He hurried to the
theater for an audition, only to be told by the stage manager, “I think we’ve
already made our choice. Some new guy.”

The new guy was
Robert Redford, who would fare pretty well as an actor. But Haven’s star would
also shine, in a different constellation, but no less brightly.

One year later, he
accepted a position at Rice University
