Rice marketing expert: Your best Memorial Day deals may be hiding at home
HOUSTON – (May 25, 2016) – Retail stores across the nation will be luring shoppers with a variety of deals and bargains this Memorial Day weekend.
Utpal Dholakia, the George R. Brown Professor of Marketing at Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business and a marketing and consumer-behavior expert, said the Memorial Day holiday is a great time for people to take stock of things they already possess rather than search for new bargains. He discussed his money-saving insights in an interview with WalletHub.com this week and is available for media interviews.
“Some of us may have already spring-cleaned our homes, but for the rest of us, this is a great time to ‘shop our closets and pantries’ for the summer,” Dholakia said. “Rather than buy new clothes, shoes or furniture, why not discover something unused at the back of a closet or in a corner of a room and start enjoying it? That said, this weekend is a great time to buy fresh foods (fruits, vegetables, healthy meats, etc.) for a Memorial Day barbecue or a festive meal. Many supermarkets and grocers have really attractive sales and promotions this week.”

It’s interesting that the suggestion is to shop for healthy items. I really like the suggestions about folks taking a moment, and finding things which they hidden somewhere in a closet. As I look in my garage, I see a 65 inch TV that no longer works, and a TON of electronics that have ZERO value, yet I sent a large amount of money getting them. I find that a lot of times we pay good money for things we’ll get very little use of.
