CHINESE PAINTINGS
TO BE INTERPRETED
Poet/painter Catherine Woo will explore
Chinese cultural aesthetics at Rice University Feb. 8
A free public
lecture on Chinese culture, poetry and painting will be presented at Rice
University at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 8. Catherine Woo, an internationally known scholar,
painter, poet and educator, will speak on “Magic of the Brush: Spectrums of
Chinese Culture Through Poetry and Painting” at Rice’s James A. Baker III
Institute for Public Policy. Woo’s paintings have been shown in museums
throughout Asia and the United States, and her poems have become popular songs
in Taiwan. She has been a member of the National Council on the Arts and served
as a commissioner for arts and culture for the City of San Diego. Woo currently
teaches courses on Chinese painting and calligraphy at San Diego State
University, where she developed and directed the program on China studies. The
one-hour lecture is presented by the Baker Institute’s Transnational China
Project, Rice’s Asian Studies Program, the South Chapter of the Chinese Writers
Association in North America and the Asia Society of Texas. For directions to
