Rice students participate in annual Outreach Day

Rice students and community members joined together on Aug. 27 to serve Houston during the annual Outreach Day, hosted by Rice’s Center for Civic Leadership (CCL) and the Rice Student Volunteer Program (RSVP). Designed to teach participants about social issues facing Houston, Outreach Day is not regarded as “one day of service,” but rather “day one of service.” This year the focus of the day was refugee resettlement in the Houston area.

Over 200 students partnered with Interfaith Ministries, Amaanah Refugee Services, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Plant It Forward and Sewa International Houston. Thashā Uche, assistant director of the CCL and coordinator of Outreach Day, said, “The purpose was to highlight refugee contributions to the city of Houston, increase awareness of refugee services and advertise future volunteer opportunities for Rice students.” For more information about the CCL and RSVP, visit ccl.rice.edu.
