New Library CD-ROM Network Provides Scholarly Resources

RICE NEWS
April 29, 1999

Fondren Library has a new network that is designed to put CD-ROM databases
on an equal footing with the Web-based resources by providing valuable scholarly
indexes, which frequently include abstracts and articles.

The Fondren CD-ROM network uses two specialized servers and client software
for Macs, UNIX and Windows.

Instructions for downloading, installing and configuring the client program
for specific computer platforms is available at http://riceinfo.rice.edu/Fondren/Indexes/cdrom_net.html.

The available indexes cover arts and humanities, science, social sciences and
philosophy. Other specialized indexes include GeoRef, Ethnic Newswatch, the
British Library Catalog and Biological Abstracts.

For more information about using the networked CDs contact Chuck Bearden, the
electronic resources librarian, at cbearden@rice.edu.
