The Graduate Student Association (GSA) recognized two faculty members for teaching
and mentoring, two staff members for service to graduate students, and students
for their outstanding achievements.

The GSA awards are meant to encourage and recognize outstanding service to
graduate student life and education at Rice. The award criteria are intentionally
kept vague in order to permit recognition of the broadest possible range of
service to the Rice graduate community.

Recipients are selected based on demonstrated commitment to graduate education
on teaching graduate students at Rice.

The GSA gave Graduate Student Association Teaching Awards to James Faubion,
associate professor of anthropology, and Diana Lobel, the Anna Smith Fine Assistant
Professor of Judaic Studies.

Recipients for the Graduate Student Association Staff Service Awards are selected
in recognition of efforts beyond the call of duty to improve the quality of
life for graduate students at Rice.

The service awards went to Julie Kudelka, the department coordinator for bioengineering,
and Iva Jean Jorgensen, the department coordinator for computer science.

Each year, the GSA gives the Robert Lowry Patten Award, named in honor of the
GSA’s esteemed faculty advisor, Robert Patten, professor of English, to recognize
graduate students who may not otherwise have been honored for their service
and achievements on behalf of graduate students. Up to four awards may be given
each year. The 1999 recipient is Shannon Leonard, a graduate student in the
department of English.
