WSJ ranks Rice second in the country for best student-to-faculty ratio

Rice University’s undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio of 6-to-1 is the lowest among colleges and universities in the South and the second best in the country, according to the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education college rankings.

In an article titled “Top Colleges in the South for Student-to-Faculty Ratio” that was posted online Jan. 6, the Wall Street Journal reported that Rice is one of seven schools in the nation to have a student-to-faculty ratio of 6-to-1. Only the California Institute of Technology’s ratio of 3-to-1 is lower than Rice’s.

“College students who want to maximize their chances to interact directly with faculty often seek out schools with a low student-to-faculty ratio,” the article noted.

Among the top Southern schools with the lowest student-to-faculty ratios in the WSJ/THE ranking, Rice is followed by Catholic University of America and Duke University (7-to-1); Emory University, Howard University, University of Richmond, Vanderbilt University and Washington and Lee University (8-to-1); and Florida Institute of Technology, Georgetown College, Goucher College, Hampton University, Johns Hopkins University, Trinity University, Trinity Washington University and Tulane University (9-to-1).
