Rice’s Shepherd School Chamber, Symphony orchestras to begin spring semester with performances 

HOUSTON – (Jan. 23, 2017) – Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music Chamber Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra will perform their first concerts of the spring semester Feb. 3 and 4, respectively. Both performances will be at 8 p.m., are free and open to the public and will take place in Alice Pratt Brown Hall’s Stude Concert Hall on the Rice University campus.

WHAT: Shepherd School Chamber and Symphony Orchestra concerts.

WHEN: 8 p.m. Feb. 3 (Chamber Orchestra) and Feb. 4 (Symphony Orchestra).

WHERE: Alice Pratt Brown Hall’s Stude Concert Hall, Rice University, 6100 Main St.

The Chamber Orchestra concert will feature Adams’ “Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra” conducted by Jerry Hou, associate conductor of the Shepherd School Chamber and Symphony orchestras; Varese’s “Integrales” conducted by Ben Manis, a graduate student of orchestral conducting; Grieg’s “Holberg Suite, Op. 40” conducted by Larry Rachleff, the Walter Kris Hubert Professor of Orchestra Conducting; and Kodály’s “Dances of Galánta” conducted by Hou.

The Symphony Orchestra’s program will include Messiaen’s “Les Offrandes Oubliées,” Bartók’s “Violin Concerto No. 2” featuring soloist Michael Ferri and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, “Eroica.” Rachleff will conduct the performance.
