Paul Brace, the Clarence L. Carter
Professor of Political Science, presented Courts as
Agents of Continuity and Change: Winning and Losing in State
Supreme Courts (co-authored with Melinda Gann Hall,
Michigan State U.) at the 2000 annual meetings of the American
Political Science Association in Washington, D.C. Brace
also delivered a talk on presidential selection at the fourth
International Seminar of the United States and Mexico, in
Culiacan, Mexico.
Jane Chance, professor, Dept. of
English, presented an invited lecture at the U. of TennesseeKnoxville
Oct. 5 on The Castration of Saturn: Kingship and the
Abuse of Power in Chaucer. Her two books, Tolkiens
Art: A Mythology for England and The Lord of
the Rings: The Mythology of Power, have been accepted
for reprinting in revised editions in 2001 by the U. of
Kentucky Press.
Peng Jiang, graduate student, Dept.
of Chemistry, was awarded the 2000 Materials Research Society
(MRS) fall meeting Graduate Student Award from the MRS.
Jiangs adviser is Vicki Colvin, assistant professor,
Dept. of Chemistry.
Maria-Regina Kecht, associate professor
of German and director of the Center for the Study of Languages,
participated in the 24th annual conference of the German
Studies Association Oct. 5-8 in Houston and presented a
paper on Questioning Collective Images: Austrians
and Gypsy Identity. She also was asked to serve as
a commentator on four papers presented in the session Konstruktion
und Dekonstruktion (nationaler) Identität.
