Former Houston Mayor Bob Lanier–who served as Bayou City chief executive from 1991 to 1997–will deliver a series of lectures on “Revitalization of Downtowns: Theory and Practice” at Rice University starting Wednesday, April 7.
In addition to his April 7 lecture, Lanier will speak on April 14 and April 28. All three lectures will be in the International Conference Facility of James A. Baker III Hall on the Rice campus. The program will start each evening at 6:30 p.m.
The lectures are free and open to the public. Rice faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. A question and answer session will follow each lecture.
During the lecture series, Lanier will cover a number of key topics that will have an impact on the future health of Houston’s downtown communities.
Among the items to be covered are: urban infrastructure and how it is linked to economic development; housing; race relations; and transportation, specifically the logic of a rail system–a hotly debated topic for more than two decades in Houston.
The lecture series is being co-sponsored by Rice’s School of Social Sciences and the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy.
