Training for the new campus phone system will begin Nov. 17-18 when department coordinators will receive in-depth information on a variety of topics from programming phones to ordering stationary.

After the initial class, the department coordinators will help other people in their areas learn the new phone system at the time of the switch to the Meridian 1 Communications System, explained Sharon Weatherford, a project manager with Williams Communications.

Weatherford is overseeing Rice’s installation of the new phone system and the copper cable backbone. Rice will switch from the old phone system to the new in two stages. From Jan. 3 through Jan. 17 faculty and staff phones will be converted. Next summer, the second stage will extend the phone system to students.

Additional training sessions for the Rice community will be held from Nov. 30 to Dec. 17. Large departments will be assigned a particular day for training and all others can go on days open to all members of the Rice community. The open days have not yet been designated.
