The Humanities Research Center (HRC) has developed a new Grant-Writing Fellows program aimed at fostering collaborative research initiatives and providing Rice faculty the time and resources to write grants for new intellectual endeavors.

The fellowships will grant three tenured and tenure-track faculty research funds and a semester’s release from their teaching duties to focus on applying for grants from such foundations as Ford or Rockefeller or for institutional programs, like the Mellon Sawyer Seminar Program.

“This new grant program supports a major goal of the HRC, fostering faculty research initiatives through stimulating innovation and generating new research opportunities within and beyond the university,” said Caroline Levander, director of the HRC and professor of English.

This program will bring to six the number of faculty fellowships the HRC awards annually. Since 1996, the center has been awarding semester-long teaching-release research leaves to help Rice faculty work on book-length projects or to jump-start new book projects.

Gary Wihl, dean of the School of Humanities, said, “This new fellow’s program supports the School of Humanities’ goals of stimulating innovative collaborative research programs, particularly ones that contribute to the intellectual life of the university and increase our visibility.”

Application procedures for the Grant-Writing Fellows program will be available on the HRC Web site, <http://hrc.rice.edu/>. The deadline for proposal submission is Nov. 6. The first set of fellowships will be awarded for the 2007-08 academic year.
