For the second year in a row, Rice University has made the Houston Business Journal’s (HBJ) list of “Houston’s Best Places to Work.”

Although the specific ranking won’t be announced by HBJ until the award ceremony June 15, Rice was informed that more than 500 of its employees filled out this year’s survey.

The winning institutions were determined by responses of employees who took the initiative to fill out an online survey measuring 40 attributes associated with employee satisfaction and involvement with the workplace. Participating institutions were considered for the rankings only if the percentage of their employees who took the survey was high enough to represent a statistically valid sample based on the size of their workforce.

“Since last year’s recognition, we’ve tried hard to show that Rice values each of our employees just as much as they value Rice,” said Mary Cronin, associate vice president for human resources. “The fact that so many Rice employees cared enough to fill out the survey conveys how important the university is to them, and how they want us all to be an even better place to work.

“We’re two for two in this HBJ competition, and that should convey to potential job applicants that they’re coming to the right place,” Cronin said.

Rice employee relations coordinator Scott Helsinger, who helped spread the word to Rice employees that they could participate in the survey, said the complete list of Houston’s Best Places to Work will be published this summer in the HBJ.
