Solutions sought to Texas dropout crisis

”Solutions to the Texas Dropout Crisis: a Focus on Student Engagement” takes place Sept. 26 at the University of St. Thomas, co-hosted by Rice’s Center for Education.

The full-day conference will highlight theoretical perspectives and research on student engagement, proven program methods and a discussion on local and national school-reform initiatives. Houston is one of the top 10 cities for high school dropouts, according to 2004 research by Johns Hopkins University.

Stephen Klineberg, professor of sociology, will discuss transformations in Texas’ demographics. A keynote speech will be delivered by State Representative Rob Eissler.
