Wiess sophomore Anthony Rendon received a proclamation from Houston Mayor Annise Parker, who proclaimed June 29, 2010 as “Anthony Rendon Day.”

Praising his attitude that “lifted up the rest of the team,” Houston Mayor Annise Parker honored Wiess sophomore baseball standout Anthony Rendon with a proclamation making June 29, 2010 “Anthony Rendon Day.”

Rendon, who was recently selected national player of the year by Baseball America magazine, told the mayor and members of City Council he was “overwhelmed just to be here.”

The proclamation cited Rendon’s impressive statistics this season, including a .394 batting average, 26 home runs and 85 RBIs with 65 walks. It also made note of the other awards he received, including Conference USA Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, 2010 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Sporting Goods Division I Player of the Year and a First Team All-American selection.

Rice Owl third baseman Anthony Rendon presented Houston Mayor Annise Parker with a personalized Rice jersey.

Council member Anne Clutterbuck told the crowd in council chambers that Rendon “plays with a joy and love of the game” that inspires his teammates. “We’re so proud to call you one of our own,” she said.

Several officials paid tribute to Rendon’s parents, Bridget and Rene Rendon, who were present in the chamber. “Not only did they raise a great player,” said Parker ’78, herself a Rice alumna, “they raised a Rice Owl.”
