, both graduate students of George
Hirasaki
, the A.J. Hartsook Professor in
Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, placed first and second, respectively,
in the Ph.D. division of the SPE Gulf Coast Regional Student Paper Contest held
April 1-2 at Texas A&M. As a first-place winner, Li will present his paper,
“Wettability Alteration and Foam Mobility Control in a Layered 2-D Heterogeneous System,” at the International
Student Paper Contest being held at the ATCE Conference in October in Denver.
Chatterjee’s paper was titled “Effects of Lithologic Heterogeneity and
Focused Fluid Flow on Gas Hydrate Distribution in Marine Sediment.”

Richard Tapia, University Professor at Rice as well as the Maxfield-Oshman Professor of Computational and Applied Mathematics and director of the Center for Excellence and Equity in Education, won the 2011 American Society for Engineering Education DuPont Minorities in Engineering Award. The award consists of a $1,500 honorarium, a framed certificate and a grant of $500 for travel expenses to the organization’s annual conference in June.
