Rice’s Richard Tapia receives National Medal of Science from President Obama

Rice University mathematician Richard Tapia received the National Medal of Science from President Barack Obama at a White House ceremony Oct. 21. The medal is the highest honor bestowed upon a scientist by the U.S government. Tapia was honored "for his pioneering and fundamental contributions in optimization theory and numerical analysis and for his dedication and sustained efforts in fostering diversity and excellence in mathematics and science education."
