Faculty members awarded for excellence in teaching, mentoring, service

Each year Rice honors faculty members who have served the students through exemplary teaching, mentoring or service. Below are the winners of the 2012 teaching awards:

BRENT HOUCHENS

Nicolas Salgo Distinguished Teacher Award

Rice’s junior and senior class have named Brent Houchens, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and materials science, as the recipient of Rice’s oldest teaching award: the Nicolas Salgo Distinguished Teacher Award. Created in 1966, the award is funded by the Noren-Salgo Foundation.

Presidential Mentoring Award

Winners of this year’s Presidential Mentoring Award are Elizabeth Long, professor and chair of sociology, and David Scott, the Noah Harding Professor of Statistics. The award is given annually to Rice faculty members who demonstrate a strong commitment to mentoring graduate or undergraduate students.

CHRISTINA KEEFE

Sarofim Teaching Prize

Christina Keefe, director of the Rice Theatre Program and lecturer of visual and dramatic arts, was recognized with the Sarofim Teaching Prize. The award is given each year to a lecturer in the School of Humanities who has shown exceptionally high qualities of professionalism and dedication to students. The dean selects the recipient from a pool of lecturers nominated by department chairs.

KURT STALLMANN

Charles W. Duncan Jr. Achievement Award for Outstanding Faculty

Kurt Stallmann, the Lynette S. Autrey Associate Professor of Composition and Theory at the Shepherd School of Music, received the 2012 Duncan Award. The award is presented by Rice deans upon the recommendation of senior faculty and honors a tenure-track or tenured faculty member with fewer than 10 years of experience.

RACHEL KIMBRO

Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize

The Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize was awarded to Rachel Kimbro, assistant professor of sociology. The prize goes to a nontenured assistant professor who demonstrates outstanding commitment to education in the liberal arts or sciences, as determined by student evaluations.

Outstanding Faculty Associates

Listed below are the faculty members who were named by their college to be honored as the 2011–2012 Outstanding Faculty Associates.

Baker College: Jose Narbona, senior lecturer of Spanish.

Brown College: Keith Cooper, the John and Ann Doerr Chair in Computational Engineering, professor of computer science and professor of electrical and computer engineering.

Duncan College: Ann Saterbak, professor in the practice of bioengineering.

Hanszen College: Andre Droxler, professor of Earth science.

Jones College: David Damanik, professor of mathematics.

Lovett College: Cecilia Clementi, the Wiess Career Development Chair and professor of chemistry and of chemical and biomolecular engineering.

Martel College: Anthony Chan, professor of physics and astronomy.

Sid Richardson College: Ken Whitmire, associate dean of the Wiess School of Natural Science and professor of chemistry.

Wiess College: Stan Dodds, associate professor of physics and astronomy.

Will Rice College: John Boles, the William Pettus Hobby Professor of History.
