Rice to celebrate MLK Day

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Rice University community will hold a candlelight vigil and program titled “The Dream Lives On.”

0109_mlkThe vigil and program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 16 in the Ray Courtyard at the Rice Memorial Chapel; a reception will follow in the Rice Memorial Center’s Grand Hall. The events are free and open to the public.

Scheduled to speak are Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards and alumna Karen Kossie-Chernyshev ’85, a professor of history at Texas Southern University.

Members of the Rice community, including the Black Student Association and the Association of Rice University Black Alumni, will also participate in Houston’s two annual parades honoring the legendary civil rights leader – the Black Heritage Society’s 39th annual “Original” MLK Birthday Parade and the 23rd annual MLK Grande Parade, both at 10 a.m. Jan. 16.

Rice will be closed Jan. 16 in observance of the national holiday.
