Yitzhak Rabin’s life, legacy to be highlighted at Rice’s Baker Institute March 30

HOUSTON – (March 28, 2017) – Itamar Rabinovich, one of the closest aides to former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, will discuss Rabin’s life as recounted in his newly released book, “Yitzhak Rabin: Soldier, Leader, Statesman,” at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy March 30.

The event is hosted by the Baker Institute’s Center for the Middle East. Registration for the public is now closed. Media are welcome to cover the discussion but must RSVP to attend.

Who: Itamar Rabinovich, author, former Israeli ambassador to the U.S., founding president of the Israel Institute, professor emeritus of Middle Eastern history and former president of Tel Aviv University and a distinguished global professor at New York University.

James A. Baker III, former U.S. secretary of state and honorary chair of the Baker Institute, will introduce Rabinovich.

Edward Djerejian, director of the Baker Institute and former U.S ambassador to Israel and Syria, will moderate the discussion with Rabinovich.

What: An event titled “Israel, Syria and the Larger Middle East: From Rabin to the Present.” A book signing and reception will follow the discussion. Copies of the book will be available for purchase from the Rice University Campus Store.

When: Thursday, March 30, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Where: Rice University, Baker Hall, Doré Commons, 6100 Main St.

More than two decades have passed since the assassination of Rabin, yet he remains an unusually intriguing and admired modern leader, according to event organizers. In his remarks, Rabinovich will provide new insights into Rabin’s relationships with world leaders, his peace policy toward Syria and the Palestinians, and the repercussions of his death for Israeli politics. Using the ongoing Syrian crisis as a prism, he will also discuss major issues present in the Middle East today. Members of the news media who want to attend should RSVP to Jeff Falk, associate director of national media relations at Rice, at jfalk@rice.edu or 713-348-6775.
