As impeachment battle continues, Rice experts available for comment

HOUSTON – (Oct. 15, 2019) – As the formal impeachment inquiry launched by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi against President Donald Trump continues, Rice University experts are available to comment on what happens next.

Paul Brace, the Clarence L. Carter Professor of Political Science at Rice, said the story is moving fast.

“The most notable development seems to be polling showing a majority favoring inquiry, and a near majority favoring impeachment,” he said. “The Syria withdrawal seems likely to add to this momentum as leaders in both parties express strong opposition to this decision.”

Joe Barnes, the Bonner Means Baker Fellow at Rice’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, said impeachment is, at root, a political process.

“Its outcome in the case of Trump will depend, perhaps decisively, on the president’s support among Republican voters,” he said.
