HOUSTON – (Oct. 15, 2019) – As the formal impeachment inquiry launched by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi against President Donald Trump continues, Rice University experts are available to comment on what happens next.

Paul Brace, the Clarence L. Carter Professor of Political Science at Rice, said the story is moving fast.

“The most notable development seems to be polling showing a majority favoring inquiry, and a near majority favoring impeachment,” he said. “The Syria withdrawal seems likely to add to this momentum as leaders in both parties express strong opposition to this decision.”

Joe Barnes, the Bonner Means Baker Fellow at Rice’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, said impeachment is, at root, a political process.

“Its outcome in the case of Trump will depend, perhaps decisively, on the president’s support among Republican voters,” he said.

Brace is widely published in the areas of U.S. politics and judicial decision-making. He comments regularly on presidential politics, the judiciary and the U.S. government. For more information on Brace, visit http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~pbrace/. To schedule an interview, contact him directly at 832-628-5285.

Barnes has commented frequently on the Trump administration’s foreign and energy policies. From 1979 to 1993, he was a career diplomat with the U.S. State Department, serving in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. His last assignment in the State Department was with the Policy Planning Staff.

Rice University has a VideoLink ReadyCam TV interview studio. ReadyCam is capable of transmitting broadcast-quality high-definition and standard-definition video directly to all news media organizations around the world 24/7.
