Ogwumike fourth Owl selected in WNBA draft

Rice’s Erica Ogwumike was selected in the third round of the WNBA Draft April 17.

Ogwumike, the fourth Rice player to be drafted since the league began in 1997, was selected by the New York Liberty with the No. 26 pick before being traded to the Minnesota Lynx.

Ogwumike finished her three-year Rice career ranked first in scoring average (17.7 points per game) and second in rebounding average (10.1 per game) while helping the Owls win two conference championships and 72 games, the most successful three-year stretch in program history. She earned her second straight Conference USA Player of the Year award in 2019-20 by averaging 19 points and 10.3 rebounds.

Ogwumike shined in the classroom as well. She was a CoSIDA Academic First Team All-American and a three-time Conference USA All-Academic honoree. She was also accepted into medical school.
